Who we are:
Mandate Media is a progressive political consulting firm specializing in digital strategy and services including: web design, advertising, email marketing and engagement, fundraising, social media management, and more. We're a small, collaborative shop, where you'll report directly to our partners.
At Mandate Media we support progressive political candidates and advocacy groups by focusing on finding and developing clients’ own authentic voice to engage their supporters in meaningful activism. For us, that means no false deadlines, fabricated emergencies, “10x double matches”, or AI-generated platitudes — real, unique storytelling.
We’ve worked for nearly 400 clients in 31 states. You’ll help us continue to grow – but more importantly, you’ll help create progressive change in the world.
What's the job? Strategist: Campaigns + Advocacy
Permanent full-time position, with fairly flexible hours. This role is open to remote workers and in-office in Portland, Oregon, where we operate under a hybrid remote/office model.
Our strategists spend much of their time developing creative and strategic concepts to engage our clients’ audiences – primarily via email broadcasting. You’ll manage a small portfolio of clients from across the country, either as lead strategist or in conjunction with another member of the team.
Manage Client Email Programs:
- Serve as the day-to-day contact between Mandate Media and your clients.
- Host regular calls with clients to analyze and interpret campaign metrics and brainstorm new ideas.
- Learn and employ best practices. Become fluent in communications and campaign tactics and know how our work integrates with the rest of a campaign's or organization's overall strategy.
- Collaborate with our acquisition team on list-building efforts.
Integrate into your clients’ campaigns:
- Maintain an interest in and knowledge of the strategic landscape of our clients' efforts, identifying political risks and opportunities, and proactively offering digital solutions to our clients’ challenges.
- Participate in all-consultants calls, Slack teams, Signal networks, etc.
Desired skills and experience:
We don’t expect you to know everything on day one, but you’ll need to be comfortable expanding your skills. A smart, adaptable, creative person with strong time management skills will thrive at Mandate Media.
-
Communication: Strong communication skills, especially written (grammar, syntax, spelling, attention to editing details), and adaptability in tone per client needs.
-
Customer service: Customer service and client-forward orientation is critical. Anticipate client needs, utilize best practices, identify political risks and opportunities, and pitch fresh ideas in addition to completing ongoing tasks.
-
Digital proficiency: Command of social media platforms, understanding of theories of change, and email writing for fundraising. Mastery of email broadcasting and fundraising tools (ActBlue, NGP/EveryAction, etc.) strongly preferred. Proficiency in graphic design is a plus, but not required.
-
Experience: 1-3 years experience (or equivalent) in nonprofit advocacy, political campaigns, or serving elected officials is strongly desired, but we’re open to unusual paths.
Compensation and benefits:
- $52,000-$60,000 annually
- Cell phone stipend
- Retirement plan with employer match
- Employer-paid health/dental/vision insurance
- Unlimited PTO with the expectation you take at least 2 weeks off annually
How to apply:
Please send the following to Meaghan Lamarre at [email protected].
- Cover Letter: We persuade audiences to take action and support candidates, so use your cover letter to demonstrate your ability to make a case for yourself.
- Resume: Be sure to include relevant work experience and volunteer work for the causes you care most about.
- Writing samples: include (if possible) email broadcasts, blog posts and/or press releases.
Process:
This position is open until filled, and we are moving quickly. We will review applications as they arrive. Once we receive your materials, we'll contact you about the next steps in the process, including interviews and exercises.
